Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth or SIBO is the most common cause of irritable bowel syndrome. SIBO is the digestive symptoms of c though are all the classic symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome abdominal cramping diarrhoea or constipation as well as bloating shortly after meals.

What is SIBO?

SIBO stands for small intestine bacterial overgrowth. Normally your small intestines or your small bowel does not have a lot of bacteria, most of the bacteria are located in your colon or large intestine. 

You know it was designed this way because your small intestines' job is really to absorb the nutrients from your diet. But patients who get sibo basically have bad bacteria that have gotten into the small intestine and so these bacteria cause  a lot of gas, bloating and abdominal pain.

What is the cause of SIBO?

SIBO  is small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. so it’s an overgrowth of bacteria that's happening within our small intestine. Now one of the reasons that we may have an overgrowth of that within those small intestines is that our natural innate defenses can be down and one of those defenses can be a lack of digestive enzymes. 

Our body naturally produces digestive enzymes. But in some cases our bodies are not producing enough of these digestive enzymes and this can be a contributing factor to why we see SIBO. Now another defense mechanism within our body is bile flow and we have a lack of proper bile flow within the digestive tract then we can see the overgrowth of bacteria happening within those small intestines. 

So improving proper bile flow can also be something that would help for SIBO and help to alleviate SIBO and making sure that we have proper bile flow can also be a preventative strategy for SIBO. 

Now another cause of SIBO  can be a problem with the peristaltic constructions so these are the contraction that help to move the food  bolus thought that digestive tract thought those small intestine and there these rhythmic contractions that happen to make sure that food bolus moves through that digestive tract. 

If there’s problem with this contractions then what can happen is that we can have a stagnation of the that food bolus within the digestive tract specifically in those small intestines and when can have a fomentation happening and this can lead to having an overgrowth of the wrong bacteria within that digestive tract  so this can also be a contributing Factor to SIBO. 

Now another contributing factor to SIBO is we have this value called ileocecal valve and its value between the end of the small intestine. 

The beginning of the the large intestine and it should open and let that food bolus moves into the the large intestines and then that flap should close again that valve close again. 

If that value is not working effectively then sometimes what can happen is that it can happen is that it can open and bacteria that should just reside in large intestines can move into the small intestines and it can contribute to that SIBO.

Gut symptoms of SIBO?

  • Abdominal bloating 
  • Excessive gas or belching 
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Diarrhoea 
  • Constipation 
  • Nausea
  • Heartburn 
  • Steatorrhea 
  • Nutrient deficiencies

-Fat soluble vitamin, 

-RBC folate.

How does SIBO affect your body?

  • Gas and bloating within an hour of meals.
  • All the classic irritable blows syndrome symptoms :Cramping, diarrhoea / constipation. 
  • Fibre makes it worse. 
  •  Often starts with a case of gastroenteritis and never has been well since.

Some type of SIBO breath testing:

There are some tests to diagnose sibo, two of the most commonly used and medical tests are the glucose breath test and the fructose breath test.

To prepare a patient for a methane hydrogen test at sibo, the patient will drink either a glucose solution or a lactose solution and then collect a breath sample with a home breath collection test kit. 

The lab will then measure the levels of methane gas in the sample, which is small. was produced in the intestine.

How Curcumin helps gut health :

Ancient research found curcumin in turmeric may also help suffering with SIBO. It naturally helps to soothe problems with the lower digestive tract and can help to reduce moderate levels of ulcerative colitis.

Curcumin supports proper pancreatic functions by increasing the activity of certain digestive enzymes, such as lipase amylase, sucrose and maltese. 

As a cholagogue, the root is recommended for chronic digestive weakness as it stimulates the production of bile encouraging improved digestion and increased ability to digest certain food lick fats.
